Is your toilet running nonstop?
Because if it is, you are wasting both water and money. Your toilet water actually accounts for 30 percent of your water bill so you don’t want to be wasting a drop. However, a lot of people fear that calling the plumber means there’s a bigger problem lurking even though, truth is, it’s probably something they can fix without major plumbing work needed and you will save money very quickly as a result.
Why is my toilet running continuously?
Toilets are actually surprisingly technical and the answer could be due to several factors. The top reasons most likely are:
- You have a problem with the stick float. It could be that the ballcock or valve is clogged up or stuck. If so, you are losing water over a very simple issue, and it’s something that your plumber can easily fix!
- You have your water level set too high. If this is the case, it’s the floater valve that’s the issue, i.e. a ballcock in older toilets, a new-style valve in modern models. If the valves can’t reach the set height it will continually run, so it’s best to ring the plumber and have it adjusted. So simple but it will really save you on your water bill.
- You have a damaged flapper valve. You know that little door at the bottom of the cistern? It’s responsible for letting the water down every time you flush but sometimes the rubber just wears out. Again, so straightforward for us to fix.
- You have a flapper chain that is too short, which again means the cistern isn’t letter the water flow out properly.
- You need to replace your old toilet gasket which links the bowl and the tank.
- You have a faulty flushing handle. Everything in the toilet goes through wear and tear. If the flushing handle has worn out, it will need replacing. Once again, this isn’t a major issue.
- You have a leaking fill valve, which links water from the supply line to the tank. If this is the issue, you really do need to call the plumber.
